Using GenAI in lesson preparation

Details
In a postgraduate Innovation studio, I used ChatGPT to streamline educator preparation by synthesising diverse materials (videos, articles, blogs) into lesson plans and presentation slides, as well as generating time-based in-class engagement activities. For students, ChatGPT simplified complex AI processes with relatable analogies to enhance comprehension and created short, targeted questions to foster active participation and deeper learning. This approach enabled educators to design engaging, multi-modal classes that cater to different learning styles while providing students with accessible and interactive learning materials to build foundational understanding.
Generative AI has significantly reduced the time and effort required, and increased confidence in time-management, for lesson preparation, enabling educators (i.e. me) to focus on fostering interactive and personalised learning environments. For students, ChatGPT simplified complex AI concepts with relatable analogies and facilitated active participation through targeted questions. This dual impact enhanced the clarity of instruction for students and the ability of educators to cater to different learning styles effectively. Positive feedback from students and improved engagement during discussions indicate the success of this approach.
My experience demonstrates how generative AI can streamline teaching preparation while creating engaging and accessible learning materials. Educators could adopt similar strategies, using ChatGPT to synthesise diverse resources and design contextually relevant activities. More importantly, educators can seamlessly integrate emerging knowledge such as news articles, trending tweets, or viral social media posts into their curricula to enhance relevance for students. By sharing practical examples of how AI simplifies complex topics and fosters active student engagement, I will show other educators how and when to use generative AI as an assistant to innovate and enrich learning experiences.
